Motivation & Enthusiasm

I joined the local swimming pool a few months ago to try and help shift some of the weight that I seem to have accumulated over the last year or so.  I’ve also sarted eating much healthier with the same intention.  So far I’ve managed to lose about half a stone.  When I joined the swimming pool I found it difficult to get the enthusiasm to go as often as I should, always seeming to find something more important to do with my lunch hours at work.

Just recently I seemed to have gained the motivation that I was previously lacking, not quite sure where from, but maybe it has something to do with setting myself targets and making my swims more interesting by making up a “routine” for my time in the pool.   This week I actually completed three sessions, 30 lengths each time, including a variety of different strokes.

On top of the swimming, now I have come to the end of the physio on my foot  after the car accident, I have been wanting to improve my walking distances.  I am hoping that I will gradually increase the distances until I am back up to the 5/6 mile walks I was happy with previously.  We went to Strawberry Fayre in Cambridge yesterday and I certainly walked a fair distance there - only having troubles when we were nearly back to the train station in the evening.

For the first time since the accident I went running today - ok, so it was probably the shortest run ever, but its a start and with my newly found motivation maybe I can build up the running distances too, possibly even get enough enthusiasm to go running before work in the mornings once or twice a week - although that may be asking a lot for someone who really hates mornings!

Also resumed after a long(ish) break are both archery and kite flying.  The last kite meeting I went to was the New Years Day fly-in, when there was almost no wind but plenty of time to socialise round the BBQ, so I popped over the Ferry Meadows for one of the meetings….where there was very little wind, but more socialising going on!  A hot day, and although not much would fly I got the chance to catch up with some friends and the swan kite did manage a short outing.  Archery on Tuesday was the first practice session since we began shooting outside in May - was a bit daunting to start with, but we soon got into the swing of things and I was pleased to see that the alteration to my bow that I had done at Custom Built Archery seems to have improved my range slightly too.

Something new for this weekend, if you include Friday evening in your definition of  “weekend” (and I certainly do!) is a couple of hours of dancing lessons - something I’ve been wanting to do since WASH last year.  I attended an hour of ballroom dancing, and learnt some quickstep, and an hour of latin ballroom where I learnt some jive and some rumba.  I had so much fun, and amazed myself by picking up the steps quite quickly, that I may well go again this coming Friday too.  I don’t think I have the time spare to commit to going every week, but its certainly very appealing to be doing something new and energetic.

The last, but certainly not least, activity this weekend has been resuming work on Project Doublestar (DS), the ongoing kite project.  We knew it was going to be a long term project, but I didn’t count on having so much else going on that I wouldn’t touch it for weeks, possibly months, on end.  With the sewing I’ve managed today, we are now up to the point of joining on the third set of panels.  It is already so large that if we try and lay it out to photograph it takes up most of the floor space in the middle of the living room, and still two more sets of panels to attach yet!  Only 15 more pieces to hem too.

Success all round then, this weekend - and I’m hoping this period of motivation and enthusiasm continues for some time to come, particularly as it also extends to updating the blog too!  Maybe I’m finally starting to lighten up a bit again after worrying so much about college - who knows!

A fun take on archery, and a good afternoon spent shooting at the Gleed School in Spalding, all arranged by Steph, a lady with a very odd imagination (must be odd to come up with some of the ideas she did!)

We hadn’t shot outside at all this year, for various reasons.  The club shooting only moved outdoors at the end of April and so far we haven’t made it to any evening shoots since.  I was a little worried that we would be at a distinct disadvantage, but it turns out that Steph and already thought of that and the rules of the afternoon started with us all shooting with club bows.  Was a little interesting for the left handed archers (John and myself) as all the bows provided were righthanded…

Steph had put in a lot of work making up targets, some with photos of committee members, some with giant cupcakes, and some full of smurfs (why smurfs???) - blue people with white hats as another friend of mine would happily tell you!!  We were split into two teams and given various objectives - somehow our team managing to do miserably on all of these tasks, and losing by a long way.  A non-scoring round involved shooting at balloons attached to the bosses and I was very pleased to actually get one with my second arrow - more fluke than skill I suspect!

A cake based picnic followed and the winning team were presented with plastic medals - to be treasured for ever of course.  Our team received silver painted wooden spoons - I wonder if I should drill a hole in mine and hang it off my quiver?  Maybe not!

The highlight of my day was when I was informed that I had actually managed to win a tropy for a series of shoots between November and March - not that I got the best score, in fact I think I scored the lowest, but somehow I had managed to get the most improvement from last year’s competition and it had been decided to judge on this basis.  I’m not entirely convinced that someone had just taken pity on me as I’m not likely to win anything otherwise!  Mind you, a trophy is a trophy, and to be most improved is also something to be proud of, so I won’t be complaining!

I got a couple of photos on my mobile phone (forgot to take the camera).  Not sure quite how they have turned out as I haven’t downloaded them yet - I’ll post them later if they are any good.

Midland Area Plus Archery Competition - an event not to be missed!  In my case, particularly because it was this event last year that prompted me to find our local archery club, complete the beginners course, and join - standing me in good stead for this years competition.

A friend invited us over to Coventry the day before the event, with the intention of hitting the (goth) shops in Birmingham on the Saturday, having a few drinks in the evening, and going on to the competition on Sunday.  All went pretty much to plan, including a mini pub crawl in Coventry to sample the atmostphere and real ale of several interesting venues - staggering back to his, and just about waking up in the morning (no hangover -result!!), although I should really know better than to try and keep up with Adam in the drinking stakes…..!!   Some of us looked in a better state in the morning than others, it has to be said though!

The weather for archery was a bit hit and miss, and somehow we turned up about an hour earlier than the club were expecting us, but everything sorted itself out and we had quite a few hours of shooting.  It was a bit worrying when just as we got the hang of things, they decided not only to reduce the size of the target we were shooting at, but to move the shooting line back 10 yards!

Personally, I was pleased with my shooting, the advantage I had in experience was offset by having to use a club bow and arrows instead of my own, and no sights.  As always I think I should have done better, but then I always do and maybe I should be happy anyway with the fact that not only did I get the highest ladies score, but also the highest score overall (yay - beat Dave at something!!).  Also our team won due to the combined efforts of myself, Geoff, Stephen and Adam - Geoff also shot exceptionally well.

So for once, I was happy to be in the winning team and actually have contributed, as last year our team won but that was despite me, rather than down to anything I did well!

Now I’m raring to go to our next club meeting and see if I can improve.

Hello World!

Well finally I get around to getting myself a dedicated blog site - this is where the stuff (particularly photos) that doesn’t make it onto Flickr or the KL Plus website will end up.  I was planning originally to call the blog “Planes Trains and Automobiles, or Cars Kites and Spreadsheets - The Sad World of Miss T” but that proved to be rather a long title, so this is the abridged version (Emma said I should take out the word “Sad”!!).  These, and Plus, are the main things that seem to make up my life at present, with a little gardening and some archery thrown in when time permits!

Some of it may prove to be of much interest to people (and I would be overjoyed if that is the case), on the whole it will probably be just my very random thoughts, ramblings and observations of the things, people and events that form my world.

I already have a few things to put on here, but there are a lot of things at the moment taking up my time, which is quite often the case so keep watching this space…….
